Teacher Lesson Plan – Self-driving Cars

Lesson Objectives
After your class debate, get your students to design a road sign based on their decision. Also ask them to create a leaflet or put notes on the sign to explain their thinking.Resources:
- Paper and drawing materials
- Triangle template [PDF]
- Circle template [PDF]
- Rectangle portrait template [PDF]
- Rectangle landscape template [PDF]
- All 4 templates [PDF]
Starter: 10 minutes
- Print off the PDF templates for your students, or get them to create their own.
- Recap the Self-driving cars debate you had in class, did you decide that you were for or against self-driving cars where you live.
- Do the students want to make their own choice for their signs, or are you sticking to the final debate outcome?
Activity: 30 minutes
- Get students to design and create their road signs, try not to lead their designs, but if they are unsure of what road signs are, you could give examples; a stop sign, a crossing sign or bus only sign etc.
- If they want to add text to the sign, they need to think about; where it will go, and what shape/colour it should be.
- They should create a leaflet alongside their road sign, explaining their reasons for their choices. Use the suggested points below to structure the leaflet.
Plenary: 10 minutes
Students present their road signs and leaflets to the class, and decide on a road sign to submit. Do all the signs look the same? Why have they picked the shape of their sign? Do their designs show that self-driving cars are allowed or not allowed?
Homework:
If they haven’t finished the signs, you could suggest they finish them for homework.
Send in the chosen sign or signs to us. We will choose a winner and send a certificate and voucher.
Suggested Information for leaflet:
- Why should/shouldn’t self-driving cars be allowed in the community?
- What are the positive/negative effects of self driving cars?
- Where will the sign go and who will see it?
